OLDERS’ VOICES

by Janet Benner, Ph.D.

If you’ve been wondering what people really experience when they’re no longer young, you’ll find out here!

Olders’ Voices describes what it’s like to become and to be older. Twenty-nine people tell their stories. They are in their 70s and 80s, one 99, and one 68. People from all over the United States and one from Canada talk about their feelings and well-being now and what they did before they were older. They come from a wide variety of professions and occupations and a wide variety of experiences and beliefs. This is a book for olders to read so they don’t feel so alone, and for youngers to read to know what their beloved olders are doing and experiencing, what might they need to make their lives more meaningful and comfortable.

About the Author

The primary author, Janet Benner, Ph.D., at age 86 is herself an Older.  She had been looking for a way to assist older people in her neighborhood, some caring for infirm spouses and some infirm themselves.  She started a group for 80-something women that inspired her to believe a book would be the best way to reach lots of older people and those who care for them.  She has authored three other non-fiction books: Parent Survival Training, Football: Mysteries Revealed for the Feminine Fan, and Smoking Cigarettes: The Unfiltered Truth.

“Wisdom shared in their own voice”

Amazon 5-Star Review

I received OLDERS’ VOICES on Saturday and read it cover to cover on Sunday. I laughed, smiled and felt everyone, young or old, would benefit from the 29 wise Olders as they shared their amazing experiences. I really loved every story and copied page 97 with the poem YOUTH and the words “you only grow old by deserting your ideals”. Many of my guests on PeacePodcast.org are in their 80’s and 90’s and they prove that keeping one’s ideals is the magic. These stories are a compelling reminder that we are responsible for creating joy as many shared even during challenges. I highly recommend reading this book for yourself or out loud to an elder.

“A pure joy to read”

Amazon 5-Star Review

I loved this book, it was a pleasure to read from start to finish.  Each person who wrote about their experience of being older gave you a different insight on what it feels like to be aging.  The olders’ were wonderful about sharing intimate experiences of what their life is like – thanks in part to the direction of Dr. Benner who provided a set of questions to make the stories cohesive – like ‘how do you feel emotionally / physically / mentally / spiritually?’  I so much appreciate hearing the olders’ stories in their own voice as it added a level of depth to their accounts.  Overall, it made me feel optimistic on aging and the many benefits that these folks experience.

“An Absolutely Delightful Read!”

Amazon 5-Star Review

I received this book as a gift, and as soon as I finished it I immediately ordered more copies so that I could give them out as gifts to my friends who are on the verge of becoming an “Older” themselves. This wonderful book, created and beautifully compiled by author Janet Benner, Ph.D., consists of twenty-nine people ranging from ages 68 to 99, all writing about what it is really like to be an Older. Each person writes in their own distinctive voice, sharing their experiences, their wisdom, and their beliefs. Sharing how they feel physically and emotionally. Many of them stated how they still feel like their young selves inside their aging bodies. Those that are still active and doing well physically, say that the secret is to keep moving. Some of the voices made me laugh out loud, and a few brought me close to tears. But they all had me really thinking about myself growing older, and that how I live my life now is going to effect the older person I am going to become. This book is a must-read for the young and the old. It’s very entertaining and informative, and you will have a great time reading it. It also makes the perfect gift for those who already seem to have everything and are impossible to shop for. I highly recommend!

Jim Cox Report, June 2024

“Olders’ Voices” is a unique book that is impressively relevant for senior citizens to read especially when they feel alone — and for their children and grandchildren to read in order to learn what their beloved elderly parents and grandparents are capable of doing and experiencing, including what might they need to make their lives more meaningful and comfortable.

Wisdom is the quality or state of being wise; of having a knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action; sagacity, discernment, or insight. With age comes experience, with experience comes wisdom, with wisdom comes an appreciation for what life has to offer. Informative, fascinating, insightful, thought provoking, inspiring, memorable, the individual stories comprising “Olders’ Voices: Wisdom Gladly Shared By The Chronologically Gifted” is especially and unreservedly recommended for personal, professional, community, and college/university library collections on aging, parenting, and Life Lessons/Life Skills collections. It should be noted that Janet Benner’s “Olders’ Voices” from Newman Springs is also readily available in a digital book format (Kindle, $8.49).

I am very moved by this book! I am almost done with it and I have been in tears most of the time—happy, sad, and every emotion in between. We all need to be heard. I’m wondering how many more people would enjoy the activity of answering these questions, of accounting for their lives in this meaningful way to encourage others. This book could have many editions.
